The Ontario Heritage Act came into force in 1975.   It allowed municipalities like St Marys to identify and protect heritage properities.   Under the act designated buildings may not be demolished unless replaced within 2 years.   Illegal demolition is subject to a $1 million fine.   The act was last modified April 2005 (Press release reproduced here)
